Indifferent League Form Continues

3 weeks ago By Steve Whitney

The Doughboys indifferent league form continued with this defeat against a solid Yaxley....

....side who will probably be challenging at the top end of the table as the season progresses.

Young Sam Russell retained his place in the side after the Hillier Cup success at Brackley Town Saints, whilst Michael Cirelli was suspended after his red card last Saturday.

Reay gained confidence early on with a good save from Emmington, who had broken clear and looked set to score.

On 25 minutes Butterworth played in Waumsley whose shot was superbly saved by Reay using his boot to deflect it wide. However only a minute later the visitors took the lead as Sparrow sidefooted in Saunders' cross from the left.

Boosted by this goal they tried from an audacious second when Cotton tried to chip Reay from the half-way line.

With 33 minutes gone Wellingborough needed a fantastic tackle from Joe Rich to thwart the dangerous Sparrow.

The Doughboys were struggling to create any clear cut chances and could have no complaints about going in a goal down at the break.

Manager Stuart Goosey introduced Jake Gillingwater for the second half, replacing Adam Speight. Yaxley continued to have the better of the game thought and after 51 minutes Reay turned Waumsley's shot onto the post, then 6 munutes later saved well from Saunders.

In the 58th minute substitute Nolan played a one-two with Saunders but his effort was again saved by Reay in the home goal.

Perhaps inevitably, Yaxley doubled their lead on 67 minutes as Waumsley was presented with a tap in from Sparrow's pass.

The latter stages of the game became rather niggly but still Wellingborough struggled to seriously test Ollie Sutton, until Joe Rich fired in a shot from 20 yards in the final minute, but the 'keeper plucked it from under the crossbar.

Where next?

Bad Day At The Office! Where to begin with this one. Very bad day at the office for us.
Not To Be Against The Fenmen Wisbech Town were the visitors on Saturday as the first-team looked to extend their unbeaten run. It wasn’t to be.
