Festive Derby Disappointment

3 weeks ago By Steve Whitney

Just like that hideous green jumper from Great Aunt Hilda, the Wellingborough derby turned.....

..... out to be a festive disappointment.

A crowd of 237 turned out to see the clash of the Doughboys and the Flourmen, but this recipe was devoid of baking powder and the occasion fell flat.

Defences were on top, with the visitors' back line in particular repelling any threat. Town had gone for a more experienced line-up than in recent weeks, but they failed to reproduce the pace and tempo shown in the last home match.

When the normally-reliable Deven Ellwood hit a shot on the hour-mark that troubled Ronald McDonald more than it did Whitworth 'keeper Lee Baxter, the crowd knew that this game was not going to produce a goal.

Town statistician Paul Davis reports that this was our first 0-0 draw since a game at Kirby Muxloe at Easter 2015.

Doughboys now face a couple of tricky games, at Leicester Nirvana and at home to Deeping Rangers. They will need to step up a gear if they are to add more points to their tally.
